About
Back to School with Dad
Campaign

In one of the preliminary studies during the on-going Covid-19 pandemic, it was found that younger children (3-8 years old) were more likely to manifest symptoms of clinginess and the fear of family members being infected than older children. Other findings reveal that children felt uncertain, fearful, discouraged and isolated during current times. (Prof Russell Viner et al., 2020).

This reaffirms the need for higher levels of father involvement in the lives of their children for increased their aptitudes for handling stress and to be encouraged during times of fear and uncertainty. In addition to the increased overall health and cognitive development experienced by children when fathers are present and involved, fathers also can impact a child’s emotional and psychological well-being in a positive manner. Fathers can also help promote a child’s confidence, independence, sense of self, and a positive lens through which they can impart to the children by accompanying them to school on the first two days of a new school year and write notes of encouragement to them on a regular basis.
The involvement of fathers will reassure children of their interest and participation in their academic journey.

Since 2019, Better Dads Malaysia has been advocating strongly for fathers to take time out from work in the first two days of the school year to ease their children into a new class by sending them to school. The Back To School With Dad campaign was launched as a pilot initiative in 2019 at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Dr Ismail 1 and was met with great success.

This is a most precious journey with our children. While there will always be cracks and stumbles along the way, there is just so much joy and fulfilment. Accompanying our children on their first day of school and in fact any day, gives them the confidence to take on the new academic year and reassures that we are there for them. It is also time for us to chat and catch up. Time and our presence is often the greatest gifts we can provide as a father.

We all know how important our roles as fathers are but we sometimes find ourselves wondering how we can be even better fathers to our children. At DadsforLife.sg and Families for Life, we work together to promote active fathering, and help equip families with useful programmes and resources. These help dads to better communicate and build stronger bonds with their children.

Back To School With Dad campaign endorsed and supported by the Ministry of Education

The Ministry of Education has endorsed and supported the Back To School With Dad initiative and Deputy Minister of Education, YB Senator Dato’ Mah Hang Soon said, “Typically, we tend to see mothers as being more involved in their children’s education. But fathers are important too, and should partner their spouses more concretely in this endeavour. Back To School With Dad is therefore an excellent initiative and I encourage all our schools to embrace it and participate to roll out the program in their respective schools to encourage father-child bonding. Instead of being weighed down and discouraged by this season of the pandemic, fathers should write notes of encouragement to their children on a regular basis.

The Ministry of Education looks forward to more collaboration with BETTER DADS MALAYSIA to encourage fathers to be physically and emotionally present for their children so that they can unlock and unleash the full potential of these children who represents the great hope and bright future of our country. Parents and teachers are perfect partners to impart to our children a wholistic and wholesome education.”
